This headstone is one of three to be found under Collective Grave 5.B.6., with each headstone commemorating two of the airman buried there.
According to the Downed Allied Air Crew Database Austria (DAACDA), the six airmen were part of a crew of seven whose plane, a Consolidated B-24 Liberator, was shot down by a night fighter over Amstetten, Austria, while on a bombing mission to Warsaw, Poland. Only one of the crew, Sargeant D C Matthews, the navigator, survived. Although the DAACDA records that Sargeant Matthews was subsequently held as a prisoner of war, he is not listed on Ian Brown’s Stalag18A website.
